Literature
This project is my reading project on the book Land of the Stories. This is a map that connects the fairy-tale world with the modern world. On each location labeled and numbered, I described an event that occurred in that location on the back. Here is what I wrote for my labeled locations:
- School- The School is where the Bailey Twins are educated. Alex is one of the top students in the class while Conner is one of the lowest. Alex starts to act all strange in class and Conner couldn’t help but worry. Alex then told Conner that the problem was the book that their grandmother gave them for their birthday. Every time Alex drops something on the book the item gets sucked in. The book starts to hum in class, to get the attention away from Alex, Conner threw the history book at the teacher and got detention for the whole week and the other week.
- Apartment- This is where the Bailey Twins live. Here they received an old family book from their grandmother for their birthday. Inside Alex’s room, the Twins enter inside the book of the Land of the Stories where all of their adventures began.
- Froggy’s House- When the Twins land on a dirt road in the Land of the Stories book, the first place they visited was a frog’s home. A generous talking frog was the first creature the Twins encountered. They eventually befriended the kind frog and called him Froggy. The Twin were sent out on an adventure to find the items for the Wishing Spell to get back home.
- Corner Kingdom- The Corner Kingdom, also known as Rapunzel’s Tower, is the first place the Twins go to get their first item for the Wishing Spell. The Bailey Twins arrive at Corner Kingdom, Alex attempts to climb Rapunzel's Tower while Conner found stairs that lead to the top and climbed that instead. When they both reached the top, the looked around the room and finally found a strand of Rapunzel’s hair.
- Charming Kingdom- The Twins needs Cinderella’s glass slipper. To achieve the glass slipper, they need to sneak into the castle of Charming Kingdom. There was an upcoming ball, they successfully sneaked into the palace with help of the queen’s head royal guard Sir Lampton. Sir Lampton lead them to room where the glass slippers were kept safe and failed the attempt to steal it. When the twins left the ball, they suddenly found one of glass slipper inside their bag and couldn’t figure out how the slipper got there.
- Red Riding Hood Kingdom- The Red Riding Hood Kingdom is where the Twins met Jack (from Jack and the Beanstalk) and Red Riding Hood. The Twins next item is a piece of Red Riding Hood’s original basket. Jack lead them to the palace while Jack made a delivery for the queen. They snuck into the palace once again, successfully cut off a piece of the basket and encounters a mysterious girl who also stole a piece and set the room on fire.
- Troll and Goblin Territory - This is where the Twins got captured in some trap and was taken to be enslaved in the Goblin and Troll Territory. As taken prisoners, the Twins tried to persuade a Troll princess to let them out, but the stubborn princess refused. To get out, Conner has to kiss the princess. Alex persuaded and lectured him until he agrees to do it. They managed to get every prisoners who were captured free. To not wake up the Troll and Goblin kings, they tippy toed to the throne and got a piece of their crown. Then the trolls and goblins woke up and the twins ran away safely.
- Fairy Kingdom- The next item on the list was a tear drop of a fairy. To look for a fairy, they searched in Fairy Kingdom. They easily found an unhappy fairy who was crying and accomplished to get her tear. They later comforted the fairy and accompanied her to the court for her trial then solved her problems.
- Northern Kingdom- After the Twins achieved the spindle in Sleeping beauty’s palace, they visited the Northern Kingdom for Snow White’s glass coffin. They stumbled upon Snow White and asked her where her coffin was. She replied that it was taken back to the dwarves. The Twins were disappointed and rode back to the Dwarf Forest.
- Mermaid Bay-The Twins were being chased by wolves, they were on a cliff near Mermaid Bay it was a dead end and the Twins couldn’t think of any way out. So, Conner pushed Alex into the sea then Conner jumped in. They peacefully napped in a bubble under the sea filled with mermaids surrounding them. They meet the Spirit of the Little Mermaid and found out the item they were looking for is no longer in the mermaid’s possession, but it is in the Thornbush where people put things they never want to see again.
- Sleeping Kingdom- This is where the Twins achieve an item in the Sleeping Kingdom. The Twins arrive in Sleeping Kingdom and sneaks into the castle. They soon were spotted by guards and hid in the queen’s bedroom. The queen found them under her bed and got them out. The Twins asked to borrow her spindle and the queen simply gave them her spindle, but requests to return it once they were done using it.
- Hidden Palace- Here the Twins and Red Riding Hood were kidnapped by the Evil Queen and were taken captives. The Evil Queen told the Twins her true intentions for the Wishing Spell about how she wants to bring her lover out of the mirror on the wall. The Evil Queen activated the spell, a man came out of the mirror, but then collapsed to the ground and spoke his last words to the Evil Queen before he died. Then there was a great battle outside the Hidden Palace to save Alex, Conner, and Red Riding Hood. Alex, Conner and Red Red Ridng Hood got out safely. Then the Hidden Palace collapsed and the building was destroyed.
Left to Tell
When reading Left to Tell, the emotions I felt were fear, sadness, joy, anger, and frustration. During chapter 14, I could feel the fear she had when the Hutu killers called out her name. At first, I was frightened for her thinking she and the seven other women she hid with might die in the bathroom. After the killers had left, I had a sense of relief and continued to read the next chapter.
Chapter 18, in my opinion, I thought was the most powerful chapter in the story. It was a chapter dedicated to her late brother, Damascene. It must’ve been very depressing for her to learn about her brother’s death because he was her favorite sibling and they both had a very strong brother-sister relationship.
The happiest part of the book was when she was able to find safety at a French camp. Pastor Murinzi was able to locate a French camp which provided safety for the Tutsis and separated Hutus. Immaculee was also able to meet some of her family’s friends and received a letter from Damascene from her mother’s sister.
At the end of chapter 9, I felt very upset when the pastor who hid Immaculee told her to tell her friend, Augustine, and Vianney to leave. She must have felt very guilty to leave her brother behind because she was almost in tears when she reluctantly led her brother and friend outside of the Pastor’s house. She also explained that abandoning them is like a mother throwing her baby to a pack of wolves.
I felt frustrated at the end of chapter 14, when her boyfriend John rudely commented her about her appearance. John made Immaculee uncomfortable because he acted as if he was on vacation. He was boastful about his freedom as a Hutu, while his girlfriend was being hunted and seemed not to make effort to reach out to her. He also failed to keep his promise writing letters to Immaculee as well. That’s when she decided to cut all the love between him after he said, “...there are no other men looking at you, and that’s one less thing for me to worry about,” there he cut all love between them.
