Community Service Hours Reflection
When I first began in the location of my service, I was excited because it was my first time trying new things. I also felt nervous because I was afraid of making mistakes in my tasks and upsetting the workers. After a few hours, the task began to become easier as I continued doing it. I was also surrounded by people I didn’t know which made me even more nervous, but after a while I realized these people that worked here were friendly. So I was comfortable where I was.
At the library and the karate school, I think the kids I tutored made a huge impact on me. When I teach and tutor, instead of making the helping task serious, the kids made the environment more lively and fun. Which made helping more enjoyable. At the salon and school, I think the employees made an impact because when I helped them they always had a smile on their faces. At my school, the people I partnered with made an impact because they knew when to speak, where to tour, and answer questions.
I chose to complete my service hours at the Excelsior Library, Epiphany School, Manuel’s Renshinkan Karate School, and at King Nails salon. I chose to complete my hours in those locations because it was convenient for my parents to know that I am at a place they know well. I also chose those places to save my parents’ time and gas money.
My responsibilities at the library and karate school were to make sure that pupils understand what they were learning and correcting their mistakes. When I do this, I try to explain in terms of their understanding and I allow them to ask questions and I answer what I know. When I help out at school for an open house meeting, I had to give tours to a group of people that plan to send their child to this school. So I had to make sure that I gave them a tour of the entire school so they don’t get lost and to answer all their questions. At the salon, my task was to bring water to the customers so they can have their feet cleaned. I have to make sure that the water was warm enough for the customer and not to spill any of it.
At the end of my service, I felt more comfortable of what I was doing. I had this feeling because I got used to doing the task. When I was helping others I felt more useful and helpful knowing that I was a use to others. Overall, I felt great after helping others. After I helped, there was an atmosphere of appreciation and friendliness..
