History
This is my Five Pillars of Islam project. In history class, we learned about medieval Islamic civilization. I put each of the Five Pillars of Islam in separate columns. I drew pictures to represent each pillar and its meaning.
Kente Cloth
In medieval Africa, African people wore colorful patterned clothings, called kente which means ‘basket’. The first weavers were mostly men. They sewed fibers and strips to make colorful patterns. The colors of the cloths are suppose to resemble the characteristics of the person wearing the clothes. Kente is still worn today and it influenced modern day clothings.
For my kente cloth, the colors I chose to represent me are blue, grey, maroon, pink, and purple. I chose blue because the color represents peacefulness and harmony. Peace resembles me because I am known to be quiet or I don’t talk a lot. Harmony relates to me because I like to listen to music while I do work and I like quiet places because they both allow me to relax think more clearly. I like the idea of peace and harmony around the world because there would be no more violence and more love.
I chose the color grey because it associates with healing. When I grow up, I would like to become a pharmacist. As a pharmacist, I would like to help other people get better from sickness by giving them the appropriate medicine that would help heal them. I would use the money to give to charity and assist the poor. I would do this to make my parents proud and repay back all they have done for me.
I chose maroon because it has a great connection with grey. Since they both associate with healing, they work well together on the cloth. It is also that I like the dark shade of the color. Despite the nice color, it is the symbolic color of mother earth. I am earthy because I like to keep earth clean by not littering and pick up garbages.
Another color I chose was pink. I chose pink because pink symbolizes feminine-like life. It also symbolizes mild which can also be defined as gentle. I am gentle by watching where I go, being careful placing down glassy like objects, and I have to be gentle anything I touch. I also like the color pink because it symbolizes politeness. I can be polite to adults like my parents and anyone else by being obedient, loyal, and being respectful .
The last color I chose is purple. Purple goes well with pink because they both associate with feminine aspects of life. Not only it symbolizes feminine aspects, it can also mean faith. The kind of faith I have is believing that God loves each and every one of us. These are the five colors I chose for my kente cloth project.
Chinese Calligraphy
In class, my class did a project that was based on medieval China. We did a Chinese Calligraphy project. This is my Chinese Calligraphy project. Calligraphy is a decorative handwriting written with pen or brush. This calligraphy is pronounced Hong Bao Na Lai, which means "May I have the red envelope, please."
